Accredited Mental Health Social WorkeCounsellor/psychotherapist

Hi, I am Kylie Duncan,

I have worked as a Clinical Social Worker for the past 25 years. I am a mother of two girls and a partner of 25 years. Living in the hinterland of Byron Bay, I love to garden, cook, swim and bush walk.

I began my career as a Social Worker after witnessing the impact of the Aids epidemic.  Interested in other cultures, I travelled widely, eventually living in Japan for a few years, teaching English and learning the art of working with clay. Returning to work as a counsellor and subsequently experiencing the difficult birth of my two daughters, I became interested in trauma and grief, and the far reaching effects of loss.

My journey revealed my passion for learning about what it is to be a human being, how we can connect more deeply with ourselves, others, the environment, and increasing our sense of aliveness and choice.  I have developed a trust in the human capacity for transformation, the power of connection, our ability to become aware, develop self acceptance and self compassion.

I am focused on what gives meaning to our lives, and in understanding the parts within ourselves that have not yet had a voice.  I am interested in exploring the ways in which our past experiences continue to influence us and provide support to unravel patterns that cease to serve us.  I am deeply aware of our vulnerability as humans and the complexity of our lives.  I honour our body/mind/spirit connection.

Committed to a trauma informed, empowering, and relational approach, I work in an experiential and collaborative manner.  I provide a safe and confidential space to be heard and understood.

My areas of expertise include grief and loss, bereavement, anxiety and depression, relationships, adjustment, stress, self esteem, trauma and chronic illness.  I  work with individuals, couples, carers as well as the veteran community.

Accredited and bound by the ethics and professionalism of the AASW, I am also qualified as a clinical supervisor.  I have provided training programs and education, for example, through my work with the Australian Grief and Bereavement Centre.  I am able to access Medicare rebates through Better Access for Mental Health.

I hold a Bachelor of Social Work, Bachelor of Visual Arts, Graduate Certificate in Family Therapy, Graduate Certificate in Gestalt Psychotherapy and have specialised training in Emotionally Focused Therapy, Sensorimotor Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.  I am currently completing my Masters In Gestalt Psychotherapy.  My work is further influenced by Buddhist psychology, attachment theory, neuroscience and mindfulness.

I look forward to connecting with you and discussing how I can support you.
